From 17 Children on a Terrace to a Mission of Dignity for All

Tomorrow’s Foundation began with a simple, clear goal: to catalyze access to education for children who had been left out

● Our Story

In 1991, brothers Arup and Swarup Ghosh , then young entrepreneurs – started teaching 17 children on the terrace of St. Mother Teresa’s Nirmal Hriday home for destitute people in Kolkata. What started as a small act of commitment soon grew into something bigger to support all children, regardless of circumstance, to learn, grow, and build a life of dignity.

More than three decades later, that early effort has evolved into a mature organisation with deep field experience and a sustained presence across communities. Today, Tomorrow’s Foundation works across seven states in India, reaching over 3.5 million children, youth, and adults.

Across all our programs, a commitment to child rights and protection underpins our approach, ensuring that every opportunity we create is grounded in safety, dignity, and respect.

Over the Years

    • Responded to the COVID-19 pandemic by establishing 5 COVID hospitals, distributing dry rations to 36,000 beneficiaries, and ensuring food security for 20,000 vulnerable families.

    • Expanded operations to the tea gardens of Darjeeling, Dooars, and Sikkim, while supporting 100+ organizations across India in raising COVID relief funds.

    • Continued education through worksheets and digital learning despite school closures.

    • Expanded the Primary Education Programme across all blocks of Birbhum.

    • Introduced Early Childhood Education in Kolkata and Birbhum.

    • Launched the Foundational Literacy & Numeracy (FLN) Programme in 20 schools in Kolkata.

    • Expanded Primary Education and Adolescent Empowerment Programmes to Howrah and Hooghly.

    • Introduced the Adolescent Boys and Men Programme in Jalpaiguri.

    • Launched Watershed & Sanitation, Village Development (Meghalaya & Tripura), Gender, Youth & Vocational Empowerment (Birbhum), and Animal Husbandry (Sikkim) programmes.

    • Tomorrow’s Foundation won the NGO Leadership award in 2017 and also became an approved Non-Funded Training Partner of NSDC (Nation Skill Development Corporation) on 02nd July 2018.

    • TF’s youth inclusion unit LP4Y started 2 incubation centres in Mumbai and Bangalore.

    • TF started a new practice Skills@School under Sarva Siksha Mission targeting Children’s of Classe 7, 8 & 9 from Government Schools.

    • Also, started the Sukma Football Academy in Chhattisgarh.

    • Project Rainbow funded by Tata Trust was started in 2013 to create awareness against child labour in Raipur city of Chhattisgarh.

    • 375 children with Special Need got rehabilitation services and 119 Differently Abled Children were mainstreamed in Government Schools. TF also started the rehabilitation services in Howrah District.

    • 3 girls and 2 boys from Dantewada Chhattisgarh attended football summer camp in France under a sports exchange program and also met with the legendary footballer Pele during their visit.

    • Paul Hamlyn Foundation started funding our 2 CNCP (Children in Need of Care and Protection) homes in Civil Strife areas of Dantewada and Bijapur.

    • UNICEF started supporting a massive Child Protection Program in Chhattisgarh covering 4 districts of Dantewada, Bijapur, Sukma and Narayanpur in LWE (Left Wing Extremist) areas targeting 125,000 children.

    • Shilpagram – A unique Skill Training program started with jail inmates in Dantewada District Jail to train undertrials in Plumbing, Construction and Electrical Works. The project was funded by District Collector then DMF (District Mineral Fund).

    • The Shilpagram model was quickly adopted by Chhattisgarh State Government and launched the same model in 27 districts under a new name called “Livelihood College” and thus Tomorrow’s Foundation was recognised by NITI AAYOG (Planning Commission) for formulating this model.

    • Primary School model was approved by Kolkata Municipal Corporation for scaling up.

    • Rajiv Gandhi Siksha Mission in Chhattisgarh started working with Tomorrow’s Foundation in Left Wing Extremist (LWE) Districts.

    • Started Special Education on Wheels (service to Differently Abled) children in the city of Calcutta.

    • TF also started working with Concern India Foundation and initiative was taken to build a home for differently abled children outside Calcutta.

    • Received recognition from NCVT (National Council for Vocational Training) and started Skill Training Centre in Calcutta.

    • Children Council with adolescents of different program was formed by Tomorrow’s Foundation.

    • Joint Program on Adult Education was started with Kolkata Municipal Corporation.

    • Special Weekly Health Clinic was also introduced with the help of CLPOA.

    • A Community-based Education Program – focusing on Open Schooling was launched.

    • 13 children were admitted in Open School of Tomorrow’s Foundation.

    • Medical Camps of Eye & Dental Check-up was started in Government Schools.

    • Health Card was issued and psychological and career consulting were started

    • Tomorrow’s Foundation’s Card project was launched to impart Vocational Training along with Non-Formal Education with 140 school dropout adolescents.

    • French students from different universities came for an exchange program to Tomorrow’s Foundation.

    • A project was started jointly with Calcutta Municipal Corporation (CMC) for providing Mid-Day Meals and Uniforms to inculcate a sense of belonging. For the first time such program was launched in the Municipal Schools of Calcutta.

    • Calcutta de la rue à l’école was formed in France as a twin association to help Tomorrow’s Foundation.

    • Number of children increased steadily from 17 to 50.

    • Community felt the need for Formal Schooling and started sending their children to various centres of Tomorrow’s Foundation.

    • TF’s journey began from the terrace of Mother Teresa’s Nirmal Hridhay at Kalighat with 17 children being given non formal education.

    • Biscuits and milk were given as motivation to the children.

    • Arup and Swarup Ghosh started Tomorrow’s Foundation with blessings from Mother Teresa.

Over the past year, Tomorrow’s Foundation has grown significantly, expanding across 12 SDGs with a vision to impact 10 million lives by 2047.

From scaling education across Birbhum and strengthening presence in major cities - to advancing climate and livelihood initiatives across multiple states, this growth reflects strong partnerships and a continued commitment to inclusive, community-led change.
